• Pastiches and parodies of The Raven

Just after discovering the poem by Edgar Allan Poe, we studied some parodies and pastiches of the famous poem.

To start : What is a pastiche ? What is a parody ?

Pastiche : a piece of art, music, litterature, etc... which intentionally copies the style of someone else's work or is intentionally in various styles, or thepractice of making art in either of these ways.

Parody : an imitation of the style of a particular writer, artist, or genre with deliberate exaggeration for comic effect.

    The Reaction

    Similarities Differences

    - the first three lines

    - same rythme (regular)

    - the length

    - l.4 : something >< someone

    - l.5 : particles >< visitor

    - l.4-5 : sensor >< door

    - l.7 : recall >< rambor   /   end of fall >< december

    2nd stanza, he doesn't speak

Harold Billings : The Raven bis

    Similarities Differences

     - the main character is a raven

    - the atmosphere (howling growling, darning, sky ...) macabre

     - however the topic  is not love but huger

    The Alcoholic

    Similarities Differences

     - rimes in "or"

    The Simpsons

Pastiches and parodies of The Raven

    Similarities Differences

     - it's the same text except for few   stanza which are missing

    - Homer is scared

    - the raven is perches on the bust of Pallas

     - very colorful : comic atmosphere, joyful

    - the raven makes poe's book fall from the shelf

--> yet it also flies in the room

    - the raven is cute, mischieful, it looks like "the ugly ducking"

    - he may be seeking shelter in Homer's house

    - it seems it wants to play nothing to do with an ill-omen bird

    - at the end it has a sadistic (but comic) laugh

    - Homer seems to be completely idiot, his fright is exagerated

=> That's why we laugh because he is ridiculous. There is a contrast between his fright and his harmless bird

  • A parody

During the holidays, I had to chose a pastiche or a parody to make an oral presentation to explain, why it's a pastiche or a parody.

I have chosen to present a film by Gérard Oury with Louis de Funès and Yves Montand : La Folie des Grandeurs.

    A parody

It's a parody of a famous play by Victor Hugo : Ruy Blas.

You can clic here to hear my oral presentation.

  • The last task of this sequence was the writing of a pastiche or a parody of The balcony scene, the short stroy Hannah or an extract of The Fifth Child. This parody or pastiche had to write with the style of Edgard Allan Poe (with gothic elements).

You can clic here to read our parody. But attention, it's a terrible story...

    Now, action !
