• The Hill of Dreams

    Machen

To complete our vision of London, we studied an extract from the Hill of Dreams by Arthur Machen. The main character is not from London but he goes in London. This is the story of a young man who dreams of a better life. He's immigrant from Ireland.

In this extract, he describes the dirthy, the Great Stink and the lack of hygiene of London, that's why he uses some lexical fields (the war, Fantasy, void, the emprisonment and the emptiness), accumulations, comparaisons, and references to colours and sounds.

To sum'up, it's a negative vision of London, which seems not to be a good place for living.
